Understanding Lyme Disease and Ticks

At Wildscape Deer Management, we believe in the importance of educating the public about the health challenges faced by deer populations and how it may affect human health. One such challenge is Lyme Disease, transmitted through ticks.

What is Lyme Disease?

Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection that can be transmitted to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks. Deer act as hosts for these ticks, which can also carry the disease from one host to another. The symptoms can include fever, fatigue, headache, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If left untreated, the infection could spread to the joints, heart, and nervous system.

How is Lyme Disease Related to Deer?

Deer are a significant host for ticks, particularly the black-legged tick, which can carry the bacteria responsible for Lyme Disease. While deer are not directly responsible for transmitting Lyme Disease to humans, their interaction with ticks plays a role in the lifecycle and proliferation of these vectors.

Prevention and Awareness

Personal Protective Measures:

Avoiding Tick-Infested Areas: If possible, avoid wooded and brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter. Stick to the centre of trails when hiking.
Use of Repellents: Use insect repellents that contain 20-30% DEET on exposed skin and clothing for protection that lasts up to several hours.
Tick Checks: Conduct a full-body tick check upon return from tick-infested areas. Examine gear and pets as ticks can ride into the home on clothing and pets, then attach to a person later.
Showering: Showering within two hours of coming indoors has been shown to reduce the risk of Lyme Disease and may be effective in removing unattached ticks.

    Environmental Control Measures:

Deer Population Management: By managing deer populations in specific areas, we can help reduce the number of ticks and, consequently, the incidence of Lyme Disease.
Vegetation Management: Clearing tall grasses and brush around homes and at the edge of lawns can help reduce the number of ticks.
Chemical Control: Applying acaricides (tick-killing chemicals) can also be an effective method to reduce tick populations.
