Proficient Deer Stalker Level 1 (PDS1)

Accredited by leading land-based awarding bodies LANTRA and UK Rural Skills (UKRS), the ‘Proficient Deer Stalker Certificate Level 1’ (PDS1) offers a comprehensive introduction to deer stalking. This course is ideal for beginners aiming to build essential skills and achieve ‘Trained Hunter’ status. The theory component is delivered online through the ‘UK Shooting & Hunting Academy’, allowing candidates to learn at their own pace and convenience. Practical shooting and safety training is provided by Jelen PWS, leveraging over four decades of expertise in deer management. Additionally, the PDS1 includes a ‘Large Game Meat Hygiene Course’ at no extra cost, enhancing participants' understanding of hygiene rules and proper techniques for handling wild game.

Pre PDS2 Training

Designed for those who have completed the PDS1 Certificate, the Pre-PDS2 training provides crucial field-based instruction to refine skills under natural conditions. This one-day course, developed by Jelen PWS, offers hands-on experience and prepares candidates for the PDS Level 2 assessment. Participants will gain valuable insights into what is expected during their PDS2 witnessing sessions, including practical stalking, deer carcass management, and recording culls. The flexible syllabus allows candidates to focus on specific areas they feel least comfortable with, ensuring a well-rounded preparation for the next level.

Proficient Deer Stalker Level 2 (PDS2)

The PDS2 course is an advanced qualification that builds on the foundational skills acquired during the PDS1 or DSC1. It includes a comprehensive taught element through the ‘UK Shooting & Hunting Academy’, covering advanced topics such as firearms and optics, deer ageing and condition assessment, and developing deer management plans. The practical assessment requires candidates to demonstrate their skills in safe equipment handling, humane stalking and dispatching of deer, and hygienic carcass management. With the PDS2 certification, candidates are well-prepared for advanced deer stalking roles, including taking on leases and applying for open-style firearms certificates.

Deer Management Course (DMC)

The Deer Management Course (DMC) is a nationally recognised programme approved by LANTRA AWARDS, designed to enhance professional knowledge and understanding of deer control and management. Now in its tenth year, the DMC offers an in-depth exploration of the complex interactions between biodiversity, land-use, forestry, and deer presence. The course is tailored for those with some experience in deer management, as well as individuals seeking careers in professional deer and wildlife management. The curriculum combines critical classroom-based theory with practical field experience, covering topics such as deer damage and impact assessment, habitat management, and large-scale culling operations. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of deer management from both a stalker and estate management perspective.
