British Shooting Show at the NEC

Venturing to the British Shooting Show at the NEC with my wife, who was making her inaugural visit, turned out to be a day filled with pleasant discoveries and reconnections. Our excursion began just before the stroke of 11 am, granting us the opportunity to briefly survey the expanse of the exhibition before the throngs of visitors reached their peak. This initial reconnaissance was enlightening but brief; we soon retreated to our hotel for a midday repast, strategising to return post-luncheon when we anticipated the crowds would wane.

For those who attend not with the intent to purchase but to peruse and experience, I would advocate for this approach. The afternoon provided a much calmer environment, ideal for engaging with vendors and thoroughly trialling a variety of equipment—especially the scopes, where one desires ample time to assess and compare the offerings from different brands without the bustle of peak hours.

The British Shooting Show itself is a veritable feast for the outdoor and shooting enthusiast. I found myself acquiring new thermal shirts—a necessity for the chillier expeditions—and an assortment of what I affectionately term 'Gucci' gear, those items that blend functionality with a touch of luxury. Gastronomically, the day was as rewarding as it was in every other aspect; I indulged in an array of game pies and pork scratchings, each moreish bite reinforcing the show's celebration of rural culinary traditions. The gin stands interspersed throughout the venue also seemed to be a focal point of interest, offering a welcome respite for attendees and a taste of local craftsmanship.

A particularly memorable aspect of the show was the opportunity to meet with several individuals whom I've known through years of correspondence. Finally putting faces to names and shaking hands in person was a highlight, with every interaction marked by the warmth and potential for future collaborative ventures. It’s these personal exchanges that often lead to fruitful partnerships and innovative projects.

Among the many exhibitors, a few stood out for their exceptional presence. Blaser rifles, a perennial favourite of mine, showcased their craftsmanship and attention to detail in firearm manufacturing. The team from Fieldsports Channel engaged with visitors, sharing insights and stories that encapsulate the spirit of the field sports community. Swarovski Optik impressed with their precision-crafted optics, a testament to their industry-leading status. Meanwhile, Emerleaf Workshops and the knowledgeable team at Guide Sensmark demonstrated a dedication to quality that speaks to the heart of any outdoor enthusiast.

As I reflect on the day spent at the British Shooting Show, it's clear that this is an event not to be missed by anyone with an interest in shooting sports or outdoor activities. The mix of professional networking, the latest in gear and equipment, and the genuine celebration of outdoor pursuits makes for an enriching experience. With plans already forming for next year's visit, I can confidently say that the British Shooting Show is an essential date in the calendar for anyone passionate about the field sports industry. For an optimal experience, consider visiting at a time that allows for a more personal interaction with the stands and exhibitors—it certainly made all the difference for us.
